Defending champion Kim Clijsters withdrew from the Grand Slam of the year, the U.S. Open. The Belgian made the surprising decision on Friday (08.19.11), because of an abdominal muscle injury.
"Unfortunately, I will not be able to defend his U.S. Open champion this year because of stomach muscle injury," said the former world number one, who also won in 2009.
"Two weeks for a period of rehabilitation is not enough to heal this injury. Of course I was very disappointed. I've been training very hard this summer and have felt very ready to play at the U.S. Open."
U.S. Open, which became the cover grand slam in a season, was scheduled to take place in late August. With the present condition, it is definitely Clijsters could not play the maximum, and might interfere with its performance until the end of the year.
