Arsenal & Newcastle charged by FA for failing to control players as Alex Song is accused of violent conduct

Gervinho and Joey Barton
Arsenal and Newcastle United have both been charged by the FA with failing to control their players during Saturday's Premier League match at St James' Park.

The two clubs have been charged with regards to the mass confrontation, involving players from both sides, after the 75th minute incident which saw Gervinho sent off on his debut following an altercation with Joey Barton.

Both clubs have until 16:00 on 18 August to respond to the charge.

Arsenal have lodged a formal complaint that the standard punishment of a three-match suspension is clearly excessive for Gervinho, anda regulatory commission will hear that claim on 16 August.

In addition, Alex Song has been charged separately by the FA for violent conduct after stamping on Barton, a charge that he must reply to by 18:00 on 16 August.
